Paper reports New York Mayor Giuliani files for divorce

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has filed for divorce from actress Donna Hanover in a move long expected since the couple's public break-up during Giuliani's aborted U.S. Senate campaign earlier this year.

The New York Daily News Wednesday, citing sources, said Giuliani officially filed for divorce and was negotiating terms of the split Monday with his estranged wife before Acting State Supreme Court Justice Judith Gische.

The couple has two children, Andrew, 14, and Caroline, 11.

The paper said Giuliani's attorney, Raoul Felder, and Hanover's attorney, Helene Brezinksy, declined to comment on the negotiations. "I'm not going to comment," the Daily News quoted the Mayor as saying.

In April, Giuliani revealed he had prostate cancer.

Within weeks he disclosed that a Manhattan divorcee with whom he had been seen was a "very good friend" and then publicly announced that he and Hanover were separating.

A few days later, he announced he would not seek the Republican Party's nomination to run against first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton for U.S. Senate from New York.

Clinton defeated Giuliani's replacement, Long Island Congressman Rick Lazio, in November to become the first first lady ever to hold public office in the United States.
