- THE ANSWER -
Likely GOP nominee Bob Dole and Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.),
co-chair of
the GOP platform committee, have reportedly reached a compromise on
abortion language in the GOP platform. What is the nature of the
agreement?
- The committee will put tolerance language directly into
the abortion plank of the GOP platform expressing support for the "deep
and sometimes differing views on issues of personal conscience like
abortion and capital punishment."
- The GOP platform will maintain the plank calling for a
constitutional amendment outlawing abortion, but the platform's preamble
will recognize "within our ranks different approaches to achieving our
common goal." And a new "tolerance plank" would
acknowledge "deep and sometimes differing views on issues of
personal conscience like abortion and capital punishment."
- The abortion plank in the GOP platform will not be
moderated or changed until the GOP convention in August.
- The GOP platform will maintain the plank calling for a
constitutional amendment outlawing abortion, but the platform's preamble
will recognize "within our ranks different approaches to achieving our
common goal." The convention will vote on a new "tolerance plank" that

personal conscience like abortion and capital punishment."
