Phillips, a Republican-turned-independent, has been leading the conservative charge as Chairman of the Conservative Caucus since 1974. He says his party's mission is to "restore American jurisprudence to its Biblical premises and the federal government to its constitutional boundaries." "We have a moral crisis, which is transcendent," Phillips declared in May, 1995 at a Taxpayers meeting. "We have a financial crisis which is drawing ever more near." His solutions for solving the country's economic problems include balancing budget, eliminating the national debt, fighting inflation by abolishing the Federal Reserve System, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and eliminating federal taxes. On social issues, Phillips' is a strict anti-abortionist who has promised only to appoint judges who acknowledge the "legal personhood of the unborn child." He is against any form of gun control and opposes any U.S. role in global organizations like NATO or the World Trade Organization. |
