Take A Stand | The Tally

In the hours after the Dick Morris story broke, we got a slew of e-mail. Some readers were suspicious of the timing, some wondered about the tabloid source, and others said it all reflected poorly on Bill Clinton. Here's a sample:

"Smoke-Screen Controversy"

The tragedy here is that the real issues that affect Americans are being jeopardized by this latest smoke-screen controversy. Yet again, the media and partisan bickering continue to feed topical and transitory popular emotion. In the end, we, the people, lose. I also understand why Colin Powell did not throw his hat into the ring. Who can stand this scrutiny?

On the other hand, if these allegations are indeed true, the only problem I have with what happened is that allegedly the woman was allowed to listen to private conversations with the president. I find it extremely difficult to believe that a professional of Mr. Morris' stature would play a part in such an incident. I wouldn't be at all surprised if 'other political parties' (read the Republicans) played a part in this scandal.

While I don't believe President Clinton is the end-all president, he is the man I will vote for in November. I'd also like to see him reverse the military's "Don't Ask - Don't Tell" policy towards gay and lesbian service members and veto DOMA.

Thanks for your time,

Torr Melling

"Manipulating And Lying"

THE DEMOCRATS are going to work overtime to reverse the spin on what's happening with the Dick Morris issue. The most important thing to remember in all this is that the laws of nature will ALWAYS prevail:

"WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND"

Clinton his been manipulating and lying to the American people for more than four years, and half of the public and at least three quarters of the media have let him.

-- Gary, Hawaii

"Shocked, Shocked"

"I am shocked, shocked to find gambling is going on here," goes the famous line in Casablanca. And I am shocked, shocked to find that a political consultant in Washington would go with a prostitute?

If everyone in Washington who had ever been with a prostitute were to leave the city, rents would be a lot cheaper. It's hypocrisy to find this shocking.

This hypocrisy is just one more handicap to great governing. Did the well-documented fact that George Washington had been with prostitutes, as revealed in his letters, make him an incompetent leader? Looking back in history, what about Kennedy or Roosevelt? No, this "moral" burden is just one more gift from the so-called "religious" right.

Sincerely,

-- Kent S. Rose

"Your Best Friend"

You should see your faces on TV while recounting this story. It looks like you have lost your best friend. The reason.... There is no way that the liberal news media people can put a positive spin on this story. It shows in no uncertain terms just how hypocritical this entire bunch of socialist- leaning politicians in the White House are. Their ability to fool a certain part of the electorate (the swing vote) is beginning to disappear. I am sure that there will be much more to come. They are their own worst enemy. It couldn't happen to a more deserving group of people.

"Equal Time To All"

All you can talk about on this morning's news is the story of Dick Morris and the prostitute, as reported by the tabloids. I have yet to hear one word about Gail Sheehey's story in the new Vanity Fair about Bob and Elizabeth Dole -- such as her report that Bob had an affair with an airline stewardess DURING his first marriage. If you're going to report sludge, please give equal time to all. And don't forget to point out all the Republicans Morris has worked for over the years -- another detail that is conveniently omitted in this morning's news reports.

But what everyone seems to forget is that we assume there is sludge in all parties. We have discounted all of this. It doesn't matter. What matters is how one runs the government -- which bills are introduced, voted for, and signed. Who is picked to run the executive agencies? Who is appointed to the judiciary? That's why I'm voting for Bill Clinton -- and why he has such a huge advantage with women voters.

-- Julie Van Camp

"What If Dick Morris Is Innocent?"

Maybe I'm just trying to support my president, but what if Dick Morris is innocent? I don't give much credit to anything the STAR says and from what I understand the NEW YORK POST isn't much better. If you're going to report the story, give us some of the facts behind it. I want to know what was in the articles from those two papers. I just finished reading the TIME Magazine piece on on Morris, and I agree he doesn't sound like a saint to me, but let's not destroy a successful Democratic Convention based on two trash sheets. Remember Richard Jewell? Also, since Morris also worked for the Republicans, I think they should shut up. If he is guilty, I wonder what secrets he told a hooker about Trent Lott?

-- Lorenzo D. Dillard

"Shacking Up With A Hooker"

Come on, I can't see the relevance to the Democrat campaign over an advisor shacking up with a hooker. It seems CNN can't wait to run irrelevant news stories about the Clintons or their staff as if to say "I told you so!" I'm an independent voter, I won't make my mind up about this election based on what some political hack has done in the privacy of his bedroom or not.

I am tired of Whitewater, Watergate, Travelgate, Hookergate, Independent Council gate and Reporter-gate. CNN should not be the rumor or yellow press outlet for the tabloids. I want the facts on the issues as it relates to my life. The fact that another consultant has the morals of an alley cat doesn't matter to my family or my income. I want to make an educated choice in November, based on how the government will affect my life! Keep the yellow journalism under the rocks where it belongs.

-- Eric Scott

"Cannot Understand The Rush"

I just cannot understand the rush to report without thorough investigation. Morris might be guilty of being not only stupid but out of line with his relationship with this woman. However, since this story broke in a scandal sheet, shouldn't CNN and other news organizations first verify the facts? After all, what is this woman's reason, what does she have to gain, and who is behind her? No one announces such items unless there is personal financial gain. And remember, if one wishes to dig deep enough, anyone can have secrets that one does not want aired -- and that is regardless of party affiliation. And talking heads are just that -- heads without substances who give off opinions without thinking.

-- C. Segal

"Very Suspicious"

Since the story broke this morning about Dick Morris' resignation, I have become very suspicious about the circumstances surrounding him. It seems all too convenient that this story should come out on the last day of the Democratic convention. Since he did work for more than a decade with Republicans, it would be interesting to hear what they have to say. I would also like to know when and by whom the story was given to "The Star", one of our country's more reputable newspapers (ha ha). I hope that the press acts responsibly with this story and investigates all sources. The president dealt with worse situations in his 1992 election bid.

-- Michael E. Ekbladh

"See What Happens"

Clinton should say: See what happens when you hire a Republican!!!

-- Danny Johnson

"The Sleaze Factor"

I agree with Bob Dole, the sleaze factor will be in play. How could anyone expect someone who spent 10 years working for Jesse Helms and Trent Lott not to be an industrial strength sleeze.

-- Jane C. Johnson

"The Company We Keep"

My Mom and Dad, both good Democrats, raised us to understand that we are only as good as the company we keep. My husband and I tell our three kids that even though they are great kids, if they hang with the low-lifes, they will be associated with them. Too bad no one taught this to our president.

-- Jeanne Bolin

"How Convenient!"

How convenient! That this story breaks on the day of the president's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention is too coincidental to be a coincidence. I smell a rat!

-- Thom Spadaro

"Attempting To Attack The President"

I was appalled to observe your 2:00 p.m. team of news readers attempting to attack the president's character because someone that he trusted betrayed him!

Richard Morris apparently has violated the confidence of the President. The president is the VICTIM, not the perpetrator. Would you have your news readers question the judgment of the passengers of Flight 800? Is it your policy to blame the victim in every instance, or only when it advances a political purpose?

Is this whole story any more than a tabloid attack? Is there any credibility to the story? Have you confirmed anything?...

-- Kenneth N. Wildman

"Question The Timing"

Does anyone else question the timing of the Dick Morris-GATE? On the eve of the Democratic Convention TIME introduced a previously unknown behind-the-scenes political operative to the American public. On the day of the president's "State of the Election" speech THE STAR and the NEW YORK POST expose Morrisgate. I can only wonder whether this was engineered by the Republicans or the liberals.
