Republicans Caucus In Utah TonightSALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AllPolitics, March 25) -- Utah Republicans will gather at local caucuses tonight, but they don't plan a straw vote to gauge feelings about presumptive nominee Sen. Robert Dole. The state GOP has no formal method of allocating the state's 28 delegates. Caucus-goers will pick delegates to county and state party conventions, who in turn will pick the delegates to the national conventions this summer. In a poll for Salt Lake City's Deseret News earlier this month, 60 percent of Republicans surveyed supported Dole's candidacy, 12 percent favored publisher Malcolm S. "Steve" Forbes Jr., who has withdrawn from the race, and 8 percent supported commentator Pat Buchanan. The Republican caucuses are set to begin at 7 p.m. local time (9 p.m. EST) but could run long. One state official told CNN that many may turn into Academy Awards-watching parties. On the Democratic side, there will be a straw poll and allocation of 24 delegates. |
