Date Set For President's Whitewater Testimony

[President Clinton]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 27) -- U.S. District Judge George Howard has set April 27 for President Bill Clinton's videotaped Whitewater testimony. The fallback date is May 2 should a conflict arise.

Clinton will be asked to address charges that he, as Arkansas governor, pressured former municipal judge and Arkansas businessman David Hale to make an illegal, $300,000 loan in 1985, an allegation Clinton has dismissed as "a bunch of bull." Hale was sentenced to 28 months in prison for fraud Monday, and is on trial along with Arkansas Governor Jim Tucker and Jim and Susan McDougal, former Whitewater partners of the Clintons.

The Clintons have not been charged of any wrongdoing in connection with the soured Whitewater land development project, but their involvement has been the focus of intense scrutiny by congressional watchdogs, the media, and independent prosecutor Richard Starr.
