Buchanan Ponders The Future

MCLEAN, Va. (AllPolitics, March 28) -- Despite the counsel of some of his advisers and most fervent supporters, Pat Buchanan's heart remains with the Republican Party and insiders say he appears to be leaning away from launching a third-party run for the White House.

Buchanan has gathered a group of nearly 40 advisers together in suburban Washington today to ponder the future, but there are no indications yet what his next step will be.

Aides said no decisions would be made today and the campaign does not plan any public statement about the session or Buchanan's intentions.

The pundit still hopes for leverage at the GOP's San Diego convention, despite losing 25 consecutive primaries to his party's presumptive nominee, Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.).

Buchanan's sister and campaign manager, Bay Buchanan, has openly talked of an independent run on the pundit-show circuit and, according to the Associated Press, has asked for research on filing deadlines and the logistical hurdles of placing his name on the ballot.

One group that has invited Buchanan to be its standard-bearer is the U.S. Taxpayers Party.
