Legislators Work To Avert Another ShutdownWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 28) -- House and Senate lawmakers are working to craft a $160 million budget measure that would avert another partial government shutdown and keep several agencies in operation for the final six months of the 1996 fiscal year. House Speaker Newt Gingrich expressed confidence today that if there is no agreement by week's end, Congress would send President Bill Clinton a stopgap spending measure.
"We don't want the government to close under any circumstances," said Gingrich, whose public popularity waned after two earlier government shutdowns. The House this afternoon approved a companion measure to raise the debt ceiling to $5.5 trillion and avert a first-ever federal default. Related Stories:
