Rep. Waldholtz's Husband Imprisoned

[Joe Waldholtz]

PITTSBURGH (AllPolitics, March 29) -- U.S. Rep. Enid Waldholtz's (R-Nev.) estranged husband, Joe Waldholtz, was jailed yesterday for contempt of court after failing to comply with a Nov. 2 court order to account for $600,000 he is suspected of stealing from his grandmother.

Waldholtz, 35, said he'd been too preoccupied with the details of his divorce to the Congresswoman to produce records documenting what he had done with the money. He had been in charge of investing the sum for his grandmother, Rebecca Levenson, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Waldholz disappeared for six days in November after being placed under investigation for his alleged involvement in a $1.7 million check-kiting scheme and the illegal financing of his wife's 1994 campaign. The Congresswoman filed for divorce Nov. 14, three days after her husband left. Both Waldholz's are under federal criminal investigation, and she has announced she will not seek reelection this year.
