Forty Percent of Voters Want Another ChoiceALBANY, N.Y. (AllPolitics, April 18) -- A full 40 percent of U.S. voters would like to see a third-party candidate in this fall's presidential election, according to a new poll. A survey conducted by Marist College found that only 44 percent of voters say they are satisfied with the choice of President Bill Clinton or Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.). However, Texas millionaire Ross Perot, who is busy organizing his Reform Party, shouldn't read too much into the numbers. When pollsters asked about a three-way matchup, Perot finished a distant third behind Dole and Clinton, confirming other recent surveys that suggest Perot's appeal may have peaked when he ran four years ago.
In a hypothetical three way race, Clinton had 44 percent of the vote, to Dole's 32 percent and Perot's 15 percent. Nine percent of the voters were undecided. In a head-to-head race, it was Clinton with 50 percent and Dole with 37 percent, with 13 percent undecided. A total of 783 registered voters were questioned and the poll has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points. Related Stories:
