Using Your Computer To Register To Vote, Part II

WASHINGTON (AllPoltics, April 18) -- In another attempt to boost turnount by young voters, MCI and Rock the Vote today announced a new online voter registration drive.

The project allows people with Web access a way to fill out an on-screen voter registration form and have it mailed to them for their signature. In turn, they mail it to their state voter registration office for processing.

The drive is a joint effort of MCI, creator of NetVote '96, an online voter education program and Rock the Vote, which promotes youth voting. The online registration form is available at both group's Web sites.

"No more lines -- voter registration is now a few clicks of the mouse away," said John Donoghue, an MCI senior vice president. consumer marketing. "We're delivering the power of the ballot right to the fingertips of a new generation of voters."

Singer Sheryl Crow, a Rock the Vote board member, appeared at a Washington news conference to promote the effort. "I believe this to be an even more exciting event than Madonna being pregnant," Crow joked to reporters. "But having just come back from Bosnia, it strike me every day how precious the right to vote is."

The MCI-Rock The Vote represents another attempt to harness the power of the Net to make voter registration more convenient. Earlier this spring, the Federal Election Commission added a voter registration form to its home page, which prospective voters can print out, complete and send to their state election office.

The MCI-Rock The Vote effort goes one step further, although because the form has to be signed, it's not possible on any of the sites to actually register online.
