Christian Rally Hits Nation's Capitol

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 29) -- Thousands of Christian youth began arriving at the U.S. Capitol today for a "Washington For Jesus" rally that U.S. Park Police said could attract 250,000 teen-agers and adults.

Lasting through Tuesday, the event features 20 Christian rock groups and two dozen speakers, including Rev. Jerry Falwell, Rev. Pat Robertson, former Black Sabbath lead singer Jeff Fenholt and Roe V. Wade plaintiff Norma McCorvey who recently made headlines by becoming a right-to-life activist.

"This event is to speak about hope and have young people in the hundred of thousands doing something positive, not something negative," rally leader Delores Hearn told the Associated Press.

"Young people are hungry for a cause," added Fenholt, who played the role of Jesus in the Broadway musical "Jesus Christ Superstar."

The last "Washington For Jesus" was in 1988 and before that, 1980.
