Poll: Most Americans Support Dole's Decision

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 16) -- An instant poll shows that by a 2-1 margin, Americans think Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) acted correctly in quitting the Senate to run full-time for president.

And Dole is wasting no time in re-launching his presidential bid. He is headed for a rally in Chicago today, with upcoming campaign swings through California, Florida and North Carolina -- all important battleground states this fall.

The poll, by CBS News, found that among people who had heard of Dole's surprise announcement on Wednesday, 60 percent approved while 30 percent said he should continue to do his Senate job.

Although people were approving of Dole's decision, the poll also reconfirmed President Bill Clinton's lead at this point. When asked who they would vote for, 56 percent said Clinton and 41 percent, Dole.

And nearly three-quarters of those surveyed said they expect Clinton to be re-elected. The telephone survey, completed Wednesday night, included interviews with 666 adults. It has a margin of sampling error of +/- 4 percentage points.
