Reform Party Ponders August Convention

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 17) -- Leaders of the Reform Party are planning to hold their first national convention in California immediately before or after the GOP convention, which takes place Aug. 12-15 in San Diego.

Ross Perot, the Texas billionaire who has put time and money into building the new party, had hoped for a Labor Day convention, but some states need more time to get the party's nominee on the Nov. 5 ballot.

The California location and timing will probably mean more press coverage, since thousands of reporters will already be in California for the Republican gathering.

Perot has said he'll run for president again if party members want him to, but former Colorado Gov. Richard Lamm is interested in the Reform Party's nomination as well.
