Clinton-Gore Campaign Flush With Cash

[Money]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 19) -- The Clinton-Gore campaign is making Ebeneezer Scrooge look like Steve Forbes when it comes to spending money.

Clinton has more than $18 million left to spend before he officially becomes the Democratic nominee in August. Clinton could spend $6 million a month until the Democrats' Chicago convention, while the Dole campaign will subsist on $440,000 per month.

While neither campaign is short on cash, Dole is treading close to the legal limit on presidential primary spending. In May, Clinton spent $1.9 million, while Dole was limited to about $653,000.

A full $1.3 million of the Clinton campaign's spending went to a widely criticized ad campaign portraying Dole as a quitter for resigning from the Senate to concentrate on his presidential bid.

The Dole campaign claimed that it was within $176,000 of the campaign primary limit at the end of April. Since then, the campaign claims to have technically stayed within legal limits, however, due to reimbursements owed to the campaign and the sale of campaign mailing lists and ads to the general election campaign.

The Democratic National Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission last week, arguing Dole has already exceeded the limit and is using sleight-of-hand, accounting maneuvers to obscure the violations.

Detailed accounts of their May spending are due from both campaigns on Thursday.
