Reform Party Schedules Convention(s)

[Reform Party]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 20) -- Ross Perot's Reform Party will hold its first national convention on different days in different cities, sandwiching the Republican National Convention, CNN has learned.

Candidates seeking the Reform Party's presidential nomination will "present their ideas and solutions to the members of the Reform Party and to the nation" at the convention center in Long Beach, Calif., at 7 p.m. EDT on Aug. 11, the day before the GOP Convention begins in San Diego, a Reform Party official said.

The Reform Party will "take one week to vote for the presidential nominee via Internet, phone and mail," the official said.

The party's nominee will be chosen and give an acceptance speech Aug. 18, three days after the GOP convention ends, at the convention center in Valley Forge, Pa., near Philadelphia. The time is likely to be prime time.

Originally the Reform Party planned a convention around Labor Day, but, according to the party official, moved it up because of pending state deadlines.

Four states -- Montana, Virginia, California and Oregon -- have set late August deadlines to list the presidential and vice presidential candidates.

The Reform Party has gained ballot access in 18 states, and party officials said they expect to be on the ballot in all

50 states. Additional convention details are still being worked out.
