Alabama Run-offs Today

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AllPolitics, June 25) -- Alabama voters go to the polls today to choose who will compete in November to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Howell Heflin.

On the Democratic side, state Sen. Roger Bedford has a comfortable edge over U.S. Rep Glen Browder in recent polls. On the Republican side, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is favored against state Sen. Sid McDonald.

It's been a dirty affair, with all four candidates complaining they have been victims of mudslinging. A paltry 15 percent turnout is predicted. Heflin, 75, was elected in 1978.
