Gingrich Predicts Anti-Abortion Running Mate

[Newt Gingrich]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 25) -- House Speaker Newt Gingrich thinks there is only one pro-choice Republican that Bob Dole could get away with naming as his running mate: retired Gen. Colin Powell.

In an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live" Monday night, Gingrich predicted strong anti-abortion feelings within the GOP probably will dictate Dole pick an anti-abortion running mate.

The lone exception, Gingrich said, may be Powell, who continues to insist he's not running for anything this year.

"I think Colin Powell is probably the only person who could do that," Gingrich said. "I think Colin Powell is the one person whose appeal is so broad..." (224K WAV sound)

Gingrich called President Bill Clinton "a master of falsehood," who has chosen "carefully managed mendacity as a route to re-election, even if the result is to undermine the nation's civic virtue."

Gingrich said he is disappointed that he and Clinton never could reach final agreement on a bipartisan campaign finance reform commission. The two shook hands on the idea during a New Hampshire joint appearance, but nothing came of their talk.

Gingrich said it's still a good idea, but "we've never been able to get the staffs to agree."
