Debate Commission To Sponsor Voter Get-Togethers

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 16) -- To help voters watch this fall's debates free from campaign consultants' spin and instant TV analysis, the Commission on Presidential Debates will sponsor voter gatherings where people can watch and then discuss the candidates and their views.

People who attend "DebateWatch '96" at schools, libraries and community centers meetings will watch, then turn the television off and discuss "not who won or lost, but what they have learned," said Frank Fahrenkopf, co-chair of the commission.

The idea is to create "a format where people can choose in an unfiltered and non-slick environment," said the commission's other co-chair, Paul Kirk.

The debates -- three between the presidential candidates and one between the vice presential candidates -- will occur in late September and October. The first presidential debate occurs Sept. 25 in St. Louis.
