First Demi Moore, Now Clinton And Dole?

ESSEX, Conn. (AllPolitics, July 17) -- Like so many celebrities before them, politicians like Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, Newt Gingrich and Bill and Hillary Clinton are appearing in the nude. Well, sort of. "Our Time," on display outside The Holycroft Foundation, is an exhibition of 28 bronze nudes by sculptor Nicholas Swearer. The artist didn't actually have the benefit of working models, but made do on imagination. "That's who we are underneath," Swearer told the Associated Press. "Clothing adds a layer of psychological protection." One of the four-foot-tall bronzes features Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) trying to cover his nakedness. Where's a fig leaf when you need one?

Seen, But Not Heard

[Chelsea]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 17) -- Contrary to some reports, First Daughter Chelsea Clinton, 16, will not speak at the Democratic National Convention next month, according to White House spokesman Mike McCurry. McCurry said that Chelsea's first public speaking appearance was "never an idea that was under consideration by the first family," although there had been some speculation by others. Chelsea is expected to attend the Chicago gathering, though.

Cellular Protection

[Clinton]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 17) -- In an unusual attempt at crime fighting, President Bill Clinton has announced an initiative designed to equip neighborhood watch groups with cellular telephones. (192K WAV sound) A cell phone trade group has donated 50,000 phones, complete with free air time, to be distributed among 20,000 neighborhood watch groups. The program, already underway in a few communities, will cost the trade group more than $10 million. The phones will be programmed so they can be used to call police and firefighters, but not for personal calls.
