Christian Leader Says Buchanan Should Speak At Convention
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 22) -- Christian Coalition Executive Director Ralph Reed said Sunday that the GOP should offer conservative pundit Pat Buchanan a speaking role at the party's August convention in San Diego. "I frankly do not understand the decision of not even allowing him to speak," Reed said, appearing on "Fox News Sunday." Nor does Buchanan. Still calling himself an active candidate, the fiery pundit has threatened to speak in the street outside of the convention if he is denied a major speaking slot. He did exhibit tolerance for GOP moderates recently, praising the selection of pro-choice Rep. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) as the convention keynote speaker.
Reed, however, took issue with the proposed "tolerance plank," which, if added to the GOP platform, would highlight abortion and gun control as issues on which Republicans can respectfully disagree. "To single out abortion would send ... a signal to milions of Evangelicals and Roman Catholics that they're a drag on the party," he said. Related Stories:
