Buchanan To Have No Role At GOP Convention
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 23) -- Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan will have no role in the GOP's August convention in San Diego, a convention official said. "As of today, Buchanan will not speak at the convention," Mark Sanders, senior communications consultant for the convention, told CNN. Sanders noted Buchanan remained a declared GOP candidate and an opponent of likely GOP nominee Bob Dole. The reaction from Buchanan was not immediately known. But Buchanan has made it clear that he believes he deserves a prime time speaking role as a result of his second-place showing in the GOP primaries. GOP leaders feared the conservative commentator would alienate key moderate voters. In his 1992 speech, Buchanan peeved political centrists by saying there was a "religious war going on in our country for the soul of America." Buchanan's supporters won't be silenced, and even though their lead man won't make it to the podium inside the convention hall, he'll likely find a microphone at a gala party planned for outside the San Diego hall on the eve of the event.
