Clinton, Networks Agree on Kid TV
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 29) -- President Bill Clinton and television executives hammered out a deal requiring the networks to show at least three hours of children's educational programming a week. Clinton announced the agreement this morning to 50 TV executives, children's advocates, producers and actors, praising the deal that "says to American parents: You are not alone." To take effect, the rule must be passed and enforced by the Federal Communications Commission. The agreement, along with the voluntary ratings system agreed on earlier this year, could help strengthen Clinton's social values record. Atlanta Bomb Sets Off Fears In San DiegoSAN DIEGO (AllPolitics, July 29) -- Republican National Convention planners called an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss whether security measures for the convention need to be modified. The Saturday bombing in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park left San Diego Mayor Susan Golding wondering whether fences, metal detectors and 24-hour police patrols would be enough security for the Aug. 12-15 convention. The mayor's spokeswoman said although officials have not decided to change security measures yet, they are communicating with federal agencies in Atlanta and Chicago to see if additional steps need to be taken. California GOP Split Along Fault Lines
SAN FRANCISCO (AllPolitics, July 29) -- Conservative members of the state Republican party are calling for Gov. Pete Wilson and the Wilson-appointed convention delegates to step down, according to a memo obtained by The San Francisco Examiner. Contra Costa GOP Chairwoman Camille Giglio sent the memo to the state party, accusing Wilson of packing the delegation with people who support him instead of likely GOP nominee Robert Dole. Through a spokesman, Wilson reiterated his support for Dole. Stuart Posselt, one of the delegates, said the attacks by abortion foe Giglio against the pro-choice Wilson are part of a "hidden agenda" to stack the delegation with pro-lifers. Dole Snubs Local OrganizersREDDING, Calif. (AllPolitics, July 29) -- Catching local GOP officials off-guard, likely Republican nominee Robert Dole will hold a rally today at a private timber mill even though plans had been made for him to appear at a public park. Local GOP party leader John Cornelius had arranged police security and applied for a permit to use Caldwell Park, the site of then-Vice President George Bush's 1988 speech and Hillary Rodham Clinton's 1992 appearance. But two business days before the event, Cornelius discovered Dole would appear instead at Sierra Pacific Industries, a private mill that could be closed off to protesters, including the Democrats' famous "Mr. Butt Man." "I was frustrated," Cornelius told The Associated Press. "We thought we had things well laid out." |
