Dole Team Looking At Sen. Mack
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 31) -- As the deadline for a decision approaches, Bob Dole's vice presidential search team has asked Sen. Connie Mack (R-Fla.) for his personal, financial and medical records. So far, eight people have been asked for data as part of background investigations, sources have told The Associated Press. Mack confirmed he had been contacted by the Dole campaign, but would not describe the conversation. Others under consideration include Govs. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, Jim Edgar of Illinois, George Voinovich of Ohio, John Engler of Michigan and Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin; Sen. Don Nickles of Oklahoma; and former South Carolina governor Carroll Campbell. Mack, 55, has strong conservative credentials, and could help Dole in Florida. He favors cutting taxes and has asked Dole to include a substantial tax reduction in his economic plan, expected early next week. ![]() In another development, members of Dole's screening committee are expected to be in South Carolina this week, checking on Campbell. The panel wants to to complete its work soon and Dole could announce his selection the weekend before the Republican convention begins in San Diego Aug. 12. Related Stories:
