An Early Favorite Says No ThanksWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Aug. 5) -- Republican presidential candidate Robert Dole is narrowing his list of possible running mates, but with the start of the GOP convention only a week away, the field is being narrowed for him, too.
Republican sources have told The Associated Press that Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge has asked that he not be considered for the vice presidential nomination. Ridge has not commented. Ridge, 50, follows in the footsteps of Ohio Gov. George Voinovich who withdrew his name from contention last Thursday. Pennsylvania is one of a handful of battleground states this year and Ridge's placement on the ticket could have been a plus for the Republicans. Most of the veep speculation now centers on three possibilities -- Florida Sen. Connie Mack, Arizona Sen. John McCain and ex-South Carolina governor Carroll Campbell. But other possibilities include Oklahama Sen. Don Nickles and Govs. John Engler of Michigan, Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin and Jim Edgar of Illinois. Related Story: |
