Remembering 1968
CHICAGO (AllPolitics, Aug. 19) -- Tom Hayden, one of the Chicago 7 who organized the demonstrations during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, is coming to this year's convention as a delegate, and he's bringing a present with him. Hayden will present a sculpture commemorating the 1968 convention riots to be placed in Grant Park, where police clubbed and tear-gased Vietnam War protesters. "It's very important we not forget what happened here," said Hayden, now a California state senator. City officials, who hope this convention will erase bad memories of '68, have not said whether they will accept the sculpture.

Teachers' Union Snubs Dole Back
ALBANY, N.Y. (AllPolitics, Aug. 19) -- The largest teachers union in New York made sure GOP nominee Robert Dole didn't get the last word when he blasted teachers' unions in his acceptance speech last week. The New York State United Teachers union endorsed President Bill Clinton. "Bob Dole doesn't believe in giving our kids a boost at either end of their school careers," said Thomas Hobart, president of the 360,000-member union. The union provides substantial campaign contributions and volunteers for the campaigns it endorses.
