Perot May Not Make N.Y. Ballot

[Perot]

ALBANY, N.Y. (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- New York's Independence Party, which had agreed in June to let the Reform Party's nominee run on the Independence ballot, is investigating the nomination of Texas billionaire Ross Perot. Reform Party founder Perot edged out former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm by a 2-1 margin, although only 50,000 of the 1.13 million eligible members voted. Only 12,000 of the Independence Party's 38,000 members received Reform Party primary ballots, and Independence Party executive William Neild said his party won't allow Perot to appear in its space on the ballot if the nomination process was fixed in Perot's favor. "We are not going to allow ourselves to be manipulated by a process, if that process was corrupt," he said.

New Orleans In 2000?

METAIRIE, La. (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- The Louisiana Republican delegation's decision to split its votes among four men instead of voting unanimously for GOP nominee Robert Dole at the convention may hurt the state's chances of hosting the convention in four years. Only 17 of the state's 30 votes went to Dole, with 10 to conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, two to Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Texas) and one to former federal judge Robert Bork. "Louisiana can demonstrate their independence all they like, but then they can't do that and go back and say, 'By the way, we want the convention,' " said Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.). Livingston said he'll still work to bring the 2000 convention to New Orleans, the host city of the GOP's 1988 convention.
