Dems Will Target Swing Voters Next Week
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- Expect the Democratic National Convention to try to accomplish several objectives at next week's convention, including reaching out to swing voters, drawing a clear distinction between President Bill Clinton and rival Bob Dole, and laying out Clinton's vision for the future, Democratic sources tell CNN. On Monday, the opening night of the convention, the Democrats will make a "centrist appeal" and "reach out to independent and swing voters," officials say. As at the San Diego GOP convention, "real people" will be highlighted, among them actor and spinal cord injury activist Christopher Reeve and gun control activist Sarah Brady. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, the Democrats will "draw a clear distinction between the two candidates and the two parties' platforms," sources said. The Democratic platform will be discussed for several hours at the start of Tuesday's session. On Wednesday night, following prime time, there will be a roll call of the states to renominate Clinton. Clinton's acceptance speech, the convention's grand finale Thursday night, will "be positive, be about the future and talk about the 21st century," the sources said. Related Stories:
