Perot Names Stand-in Veep Candidate

[Perot]

DALLAS (AllPolitics, Aug. 21) -- Reform Party nominee Ross Perot has named his old IBM boss, James Campbell, as his stand-in vice presidential running mate in papers filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Campbell is a California businessman and longtime friend and colleague of Perot. He was listed as the chairman of Perot's petition drive in California last fall, but was not actively involved. At the time, Campbell told CNN that Perot needed the name of a Californian to head the petition drive and he was tapped.

Perot aides say Campbell is only a stand-in and will be replaced when Perot picks a running mate.

Earlier this month, sources said Perot asked Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) to be his running mate, but she rejected the offer to continue serving in Congress.

In 1992, Perot named retired Admiral James Stockdale as a stand-in running mate. Later, Stockdale became the official vice presidential candidate. This year, Stockdale has announced his support for Republican Robert Dole.
