Dole, Kemp Push Tax Plan
WASHINGTON (ALLPolitics, Aug. 24) -- Republican running mates Bob Dole and Jack Kemp touted their plan Saturday to cut taxes across the board by 15 percent, warning Americans not to fall for Democratic criticisms of the plan. "You can be sure they will try to get you to believe our tax reductions will mean deep cuts in government programs for America's seniors and those in need," said Dole on the GOP's weekly radio address. Dole called his tax plan a new "system for the 21st century that is pro-family, pro-growth and that removes the barriers to getting out of poverty." (176K WAV sound)
The Republicans were heading off attacks on their economic plan that are sure to be made during the coming Democratic National Convention. Dole predicted that President Clinton would also offer a tax cut plan, but reminded his audience that Clinton promised a middle class cut during his 1992 campaign. "And what we got instead was the largest tax increase in the history of America," Dole said. "Do not be fooled again." Kemp said that President Clinton and the Democratic Party believe "things are as good as they can get" and are "wedded to the status quo." "Bob Dole and I are not," said the vice presidential candidate. "We believe you deserve better. You deserve to keep more of the money you earn." (261K WAV sound) Related stories:
