Chuckling On The NetBy Greg Lefevre/CNN
CHICAGO (Aug. 26) -- Sometimes biting, often satirical and sometimes dull, humor on the web is as diverse as all the political commentary that's out there. Like many comedy troupes, the Capitol Steps, a satirical Washington group, keeps its website hopping with current topical humor. Says Capitol Steps producer Elaina Newport, "If Ross Perot's out giving a speech at a convention, we'll put up Ross Perot singing, 'It's my party, which I'll buy if I want to. You would cry too if I ran against you...'
Parody abounds. The Paro-dise warns "Liberals to take their heart medicine before continuing..." And a joke Bob Dole page delivers the age punch, calling him the RIPE man for the job. Or consider Fidel '96, a page promoting the ultimate Washington outsider, Fidel Castro. Comedy USA offers the SCAMpaign 96 page with running comic commentary and a sometimes unrepeatable joke. Some web humor seems sophomoric. Punching Rush Limbaugh's nose makes it redder and redder. It's silly, but Punch Rush Limbaugh is a very popular site. Vice President Al Gore offers his favorite political cartoons, all of which feature him, one as the macho Terminator 2. The web's graphic art capabilities show best in t-shirt art depicting the President's fact-free waffle syrup while media critics pick on famous names in the electronic press. Chicago's own Second City comedy troupe advertises its political impressionists. Related Stories:
