Clinton Touts Tax Cuts; Dole Attacks Drug Policy
(AllPolitics, Aug. 31) -- President Clinton repeated his campaign themes in his weekly radio address Saturday promising tax breaks for families and assuring Americans that the country is "on the right track." Clinton and Vice President Al Gore were to wrap up their four-state post-convention road trip Saturday in Gore's home state of Tennessee. "We should cut taxes to help working families meet their real needs for education, for medical expenses, to help raise children and for home buying," Clinton said. "These tax cuts will help our economy. It will help to keep America growing," he said. Clinton gave further details on his proposed capital gains tax cut for Americans who sell their homes, saying the plan would help middle class families, older couples and inner- city residents. "We should say that if a couple sells their home and the increase in value is up to $500,000 they will not have to pay any tax on the gain from the sale of that home. This can help millions of Americans," he said.
Dole attacks Clinton on drug policyRepublican presidential candidate Bob Dole, who has proposed a tax cut of his own, used his the weekly GOP radio address to attack the Clinton Administration's drug policy and anti- drug statements Clinton made during this week's Democratic National Convention.
Dole, who returned to Washington for Labor Day weekend, also pledged to use the White House as a bully pulpit to promote the "moral message" against drugs and to criticize what he called the entertainment industry's glamorization of drug use. On Sunday, he is to address the convention of the National Guard Association of the United States during which he's expected to propose that the military be enlisted to assist in a renewed war on drugs.
