  • Clinton Gets An Earful On The Beach

CORONADO, Calif. (AllPolitics, Oct. 17) -- And those Californians seemed so polite Wednesday night. President Bill Clinton took to the beach for a run this morning and found someone interested in hailing the Chief, all right. "You're a draft-dodging, yellow-bellied liar!" yelled Valerie Parker, of Bloomington, Ill. during a 10-minute tirade directed at Clinton. "How do you sleep at night, Mr. President? How come you don't feel Dole's pain?" The Secret Service chatted with Parker, and kept her away from Clinton, but did not try to shut her down or arrest her. Clinton ignored her except to give her a thumbs-up and to say, "Thank you."

Debate Ratings Dip, But Still Beat Baseball

    ratings

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Oct. 17) -- Viewership of Wednesday night's presidential debate slipped slightly from the first one, according to overnight ratings from about half the country. Nielsen Media Research reports that the combined rating of ABC, CBS and NBC was 26.3 points, while the first one, on Oct. 6, received a 29.8. The figures are down sharply from the Oct. 15, 1992, presidential debate, which achieved a 43.9 overnight rating. But the size of Wednesday's viewing audience did swamp that of the National League playoff game on the Fox network, which received a 12.8 rating.

    California Poll Shows Clinton Strong

    poll

SAN FRANCISCO (AllPolitics, Oct. 17) -- The latest Field Poll of California votes shows that President Bill Clinton is keeping his lead and picking up coattails in the state. Clinton's lead over GOP nominee Bob Dole is 10 points, 48 percent to 38 percent. By a 45 to 36 percent margin, respondents said they would be more likely to vote for a congressional candidate who supports the president over one who opposes him. And by a 40-34 margin they said they'd support a candidate who opposed Bob Dole over one who supports him. The poll of 1,079 voters was conducted from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
