A Hillary Indictment?TEXARKANA, Ark. (AllPolitics, Oct. 21) -- The latest Whitewater convict to grant a jailhouse interview is David Hale, who, unlike fellow jailed Clinton associate Susan McDougal, seems perfectly willing to target the first family, Hillary Clinton in particular. "Hillary Clinton is going to be indicted after the election," Hale told Micah Morrison of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page. "It's a certainly." Hale was a key witness in the government's case against McDougal, her ex-husband Jim McDougal and former Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker. "Mr. Hale has no standing to make those kinds of comments," White House press secretary Mike McCurry told CNN. "It's only the independent counsel that determines these matters." The Cuban Vote
MIAMI (AllPolitics, Oct. 21) -- Miami's Cuban American community has big doubts about President Bill Clinton's policy toward Cuba in a second term, but those reservations don't translate into much enthusiasm for Republican Bob Dole. Neither candidate has made much splash in Little Havana yet, although Florida is a true battleground state this year and the Cuban vote could be important in which way it tips. Clinton is due to visit next week and could pick up some support if he moves to lift a moratorium on lawsuits under the Helms-Burton law. The law allows people to file legal action against firms using assets seized by the Cuban government after the revolution. The latest Mason-Dixon poll showed Dole and Clinton in a statistical dead heat. I Would If I Could...CHICAGO (AllPolitics, Oct. 21) -- In a debate last week, Republican Senate candidate Al Salvi promised to reveal his law clients and the fees they have paid him. But now he says state attorney rules bar him from doing that, and the campaign of his Democratic opponent, Dick Durbin, is crying foul. "I have nothing to hide, and I'm just going to reveal as much as I can legally reveal," Salvi said. But Durbin spokeswoman Terry Stephan said it's another example of a "lack of candor when it comes to his financial disclosure." Salvi said he may, however, reveal more details from his income tax records. The men are competing for the seat of retiring Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.). A Blow To Nativism
CHICAGO (AllPolitics, Oct. 21) -- Vice President Al Gore, speaking to a Latino group, said the nation is witnessing a backlash against people not born in the United States. A vote for the Clinton-Gore ticket, Gore said, will send a message: "Do not play with nativism. Do not play that card." Said Gore: "The way to lift this nation up is not by pulling the weakest down. We need to continue to expand opportunities for everyone who wants to achieve." It was Gore's first campaign stop in Chicago since the Democratic convention in August. 'Bama Two-StepMONTGOMERY, Ala. (AllPolitics, Oct. 21) -- If you like politics and live in Alabama, you'll get a double shot on Thursday. That's when Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican Bob Dole will visit the state on the same day. Dole will be in Montgomery, while Clinton is supposed to speak in the morning at Birmingham-Southern College. "It's great for the state. Voters can get a clear-cut message from both candidates," state Rep. Perry Hooper Jr., Dole's Montgomery campaign chairman, told The Associated Press. Poll shows it's a close race. Thompson's Criticism
MADISON, Wis. (AllPolitics, Oct. 21) -- Gov. Tommy Thompson, mentioned early on as a possible Bob Dole running mate, isn't keeping his thoughts about the GOP campaign to himself. "I thought George Bush's (1992) campaign was probably the poorest-run presidential campaign, and I think this is a close second," Thompson said last Friday. |
