    DES MOINES, Iowa (AllPolitics, Oct. 23) -- Ex-GOP presidential candidate Lamar Alexander thinks there could be a Republican charge in the final days of Campaign '96. The reason? "I still believe there are a majority of Americans who do not want to vote for Bill Clinton as president," he said. Alexander, known for his red-and-black plaid fashion statement in the primaries, also had some advice for the naysayers in the Republican party: They should keep quiet, because complaining only makes it harder for their nominees Bob Dole and Jack Kemp.

    Focused On The Debt

    BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AllPolitics, Oct. 23) -- He never made it into the debates, but Reform Party candidate Ross Perot is still telling people what he would have talked about had he been there: the national debt. "The Democrats and Republicans had three debates and they never discussed the nation's most critical problem -- our skyrocketing national debt," said Perot, who spoke to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council Tuesday night.

    A Note To Nancy

    DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AllPolitics, Oct. 23) -- President Bill Clinton penned a note to Nancy Reagan today after she complained about a Democratic ad that included footage of the 1981 assassination attempt on her husband. The White House wouldn't say what Clinton told Mrs. Reagan, but indicated the ad wouldn't run more than another day or two. Mrs. Reagan said the footage "stretches even the minimum levels of civility in current political advertising." Clinton spokesman Mike McCurry noted that the same footage aired in a GOP video during the Republican National Convention last summer in San Diego.
