GOP Questions White House Ties To Cabrera

Cabrera

WASHINGTON (CNN, Oct. 23) -- Congressman Robert L. Livingston (R-La.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, sent a letter Wednesday to the attorney general, and the directors of the FBI and the Secret Service. The letter asks questions about Jorge Cabrera, an alleged importer of cocaine into the United States from Cuba, and his relationship with the president and vice president and any possible campaign contributions to Democratic coffers.

House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) has also sent a letter on the subject to the attorney general.

Livingston cites an ABC News story of Oct. 22 that Cabrera, a convicted criminal, had dined at the White House with the president and vice president and that he had contributed roughly $20,000 to Democrats.

Livingston asked for a complete accounting of all the facts relating to the story within three days. He asked whether the statement was true, what are the details and how did this person escape Secret Service scrutiny to get to the president and vice president?

In the letter Livingston said, "We have information that leads us to believe that the Justice Department is impounding photographs of this person with the president and the vice president." He asked for assurance that no such impoundment is taking place.
