Clinton, Dole Spending Big On TV Ads
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Oct. 30) -- With six days left before Election Day, President Bill Clinton and Republican nominee Bob Dole are spending about $2 million a day between them on TV spots. Aides to Clinton put the president's daily tab at $1.2 million to $1.5 million, while Dole's budget calls for $600,000 to $700,000 per day for ads, according to sources who spoke to The Associated Press. The candidates' air war coincides with frantic activity on the ground by both campaigns, too. Clinton is scheduled to visit Michigan, Colorado and Arizona today, while Dole goes to Tennessee, Louisiana and Florida, and could return to California on the campaign's final weekend. For the Clinton campaign, the ad binge and campaigning reflect the candidate's impatience with self-confident Democrats who think the race is over and won. Dole continues to predict a come from behind win. "Something is happening across America," Dole said during a campaign stop in Colorado on Tuesday night. "The people are beginning to focus." But Democrats are cocky enough that they are continuing to pursue an "in-your-face" strategy, scheduling campaign stops and buying TV time in states that Republicans thought they had in hand, such as Texas, Indiana and Virginia.
