Supreme Court To Hear Jones CaseWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 21) -- On Jan. 13, exactly one week before Bill Clinton is inaugurated, the Supreme Court will consider the president's argument that the Paula Jones sexual harrassment case launched against him should be delayed until after he leaves office. Clinton's lawyer Robert Bennett will argue that proceeding with a trial could be a violation of the constituional separation of powers, while Jones' lawyer, Gil Davis, will make the case that the president should be tried in civil cases as ordinary citizens would be. The court is expected to make a decision by July.
Not Doing Anything? How About Paris?WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 21) -- Bob Dole still has his sense of humor. Just check out page B2 of today's New York Times and you'll find him in an Air France ad, smiling under the headline: "Not doing anything?" It's an ad for a $299 weekend round-trip airfare to Paris, and Dole plans to donate his $3,000 fee for ad to Sarah's Circle, a Washington, D.C., center for senior citizens. Says the ad: "If you have a little extra time on your hands, there's never been a better reason for a getaway to Paris than our special fare." A Dole spokesman said Dole "took the ad in good humor." Computer Crime A ProblemWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 21) -- A Senate committee survey indicates that more than half of large U.S. corporations have been the victims of computer break-ins. According to data collected by the Senate Permanent Committee on Investigations, 58 percent of firms said they had been victimized by computer crime in the past 12 months. More than 20 percent of the break-ins were believed to be work of competitors. Defense Department investigator Jim Christie told USA Today: "A lot of this kind of crime goes unreported despite everyone seeing it happen. The survey supports what we understood." In all, 236 firms of 500 that were contacted responded to the survey. |
