Half of all voters say they are better off today 
than in 1992, and 55% say they are not worried that 
they will be able to maintain their standard of living 
in the next five years. That may be one reason why 
Bill Clinton has maintained his lead over Bob Dole 
in a hypothetical match-up. 48% of the registered voters 
interviewed Oct. 31-Nov. 6 said they would vote for Clinton; 
42% picked Dole. Just one out of five voters said they support 
Ross Perot. And just one in five say they are paying very close 
attention to the 1996 presidential election; 26% say they are 
paying fairly close attention, 28% some and 24% just a 
little or no attention at all.

American attitudes toward the role of 
government have changed since 
1993. Two years ago a majority said 
that the government should do 
more to promote traditional values 
in society. Today only 43% feel 
that way; 48% say the government should 
not favor one set of values 
over another. 50% believe that the 
government is trying to do too 
many things that should be left to 
individuals and businesses. Just 
42% say the government should do more 
to solve our country's problems.

If the election were held today, 45% of the 
country would vote for the Democratic candidate 
for U.S. House of Representatives in their 
district. 41% would vote for the Republican 
candidate. One reason may be the unpopularity of the 
GOP Medicare plan. Three-quarters oppose cutting back 
on the growth of Medicare in order to balance the 
budget.
