But Dole has his strengths as well. Pluralities
of registered voters believe Dole would do a
better job than Clinton on reducing the federal
deficit and improving the country's moral
climate. And despite Clinton's current nine-point
lead over Dole, the two candidates are
about evenly matched on a number of key issues,
including the economy, foreign policy,
and crime.

More than half of all registered Republicans
choose Dole from among the remaining GOP
candidates as their preference for the party's
nominee. But 47% of registered Republicans
say they would like to see someone else besides
those candidates run for the nomination;
49% say they are satisfied with the choice of
candidates. Only 36% of Republican voters
nationwide say that Pat Buchanan should withdraw
from the GOP race; 44% say that about
Steve Forbes.

Registered Republicans are closely divided over
whether the GOP's vice-presidential
nomination should go to someone who supports or
opposes restrictions on abortion. 40%
want a vice-presidential candidate who supports
abortion restrictions; 43% want someone
on the ticket who opposes abortion restrictions.
One candidate in the latter category -- Colin
Powell -- would help the party at the polls.
Although Clinton beats Dole by a nine point
margin, a Dole/Powell ticket would beat Clinton
and Al Gore in a two-way race by a 47%-
45% spread if the election were held today.
