NOTES
Allowances, commissions, incentive payments, stock options and other benefits not included, except as noted here. Annual bonuses are factored into government and professional salaries if they have become an expected part of the annual compensation. Government: In China, delegates to the NPC/CPPCC meet once a year and they do not take a formal legislative salary. Salaries for other government jobs are adjusted for seniority. Salaries for Chinese government and professional positions generally include a broad range of welfare benefits, subsidies and some bonuses. In Hong Kong, the "member of parliament" category refers to the Legislative Council. As in China, government workers in India typically get a wide range of allowances and benefits on top of their basic salary. For example, while the basic salary of a member of parliament is only about $92, that figure is more than tripled by additional benefits. In Malaysia, the salaries for the prime minister and finance minister exclude about 20 different kinds of allowances and perks for things like housing, travel and children's education. The salary for a government clerk in South Korea includes a family allowance, which is built into the salary structure. Professions: Based on an Asiaweek survey of professionals working in large cities for major employers in the upper quartile of specific industries. We looked for individuals between 30-45 years old with at least five years' experience with the same company (the age and experience levels for doctors were generally higher). The target professional had at least a bachelor's degree from a university, although we sought PhD. holders for university professors. In the Philippines, bank branch managers for large banks typically receive perks and bonuses that can be worth several months of normal salary. Also, doctors in private practice in the Philippines can command many times the rate of doctors for state-run institutions. Salaries for architects and engineers in Indonesia represent estimates based on average annual income. Typically, these professionals are paid on a per-project basis. Corporations: Based on the latest available data from Watson Wyatt, the world's biggest pay and benefits consulting company. Watson conducts annual salary surveys in each of the countries listed in the table. All are median salaries that exclude fixed and variable bonuses. Exchange rates per $1 used to calculate monthly salaries: Australia, A$1.63; China, RMB8.28; Hong Kong, HK$7.78; India, Rs43.61; Indonesia, Rp7,380; Japan, 110 yen; Malaysia, RM3.80; Philippines, 40.85 pesos; Singapore, S$1.71; South Korea, 1,134 won; Taiwan, NT$30.78; Thailand, 37.77 baht.
