Maggie Gets Mad Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung is fed up. Lured into shooting Sausalito, her first Canto-movie since marrying French director Olivier Assayas, she was dismayed to find an SAR magazine zeroing in on its reportedly hot love scenes, which also feature singer Leon Lai. The actress is so upset she has told viewers not to bother watching the production "if the selling point is how we are in bed." Sausalito producer Wong Jing, who made his name with risqué flicks, denies he has been hyping the movie and threatens legal action against the publication. On a visit to the SAR, Cheung has also been lashing out at Hong Kong filmmakers for churning out "trashy" material. "I hope there won't still be 90% bullshit after 10 years. There are too few art films in Hong Kong," says Cheung, who now lives in France. What is it about the Parisian air? The Sarawak Style They don't call her the supreme diva in Singapore for nothing. At 48, Anita Sarawak (second from left) is the grand dame of this quartet. Brought in for what local promoters called a concert by the divas of Malay pop last week, Sarawak stands out for style and presence. Where her fellow performers, (from left) Sheila Majid, 33, Hetty Koes Endang, 43, and Siti Nurhaliza, 21 , arrived in vans and other mundane wheels, la Sarawak rolled up in a sleek Merc. The now platinum-haired singer pretty much dominated the pre-concert session with media too. A little out of touch with local showbiz after 14 years in Las Vegas (she's had her own show at Caesars Palace for a decade), Sarawak startled reporters when she turned to the chart-topping Majid, murmuring "And you are?" But if she was miffed, the Malaysian crooner didn't show it. In any case, the crowd was more interested in Sarawak's life. Like how she kept her toned physique: "Free weights, bars and the treadmill." Questions about her recent divorce from Commodores singer J.D. Nicholas, though, were deftly but amiably flicked away. Now that's a real pro. Write to Asiaweek at mail@web.asiaweek.com Quick Scroll: More stories from Asiaweek, TIME and CNN |
