Southeast
Asia's Demographic Future
The difference between the curves of these charts has profound implications
for Southeast Asia. By mid-century the region's abundance of infants and
children will be gone. The proportion of working people (aged 20 to 64)
will basically remain the same. And people 65 and older will have increased
by 2.3%. The World Health Organization says total population won't increase
too much -- a decline in the mortality rate (which means people live longer)
is almost always followed by a drop in the fertility rate, meaning fewer
children.
