TRAVEL WATCH: MARCH 6, 2000 VOL. 155 NO. 9
By Mason Florence (Lonely Planet; 235 pages) After Memoirs of a Geisha, Lonely Planet's guide to Kyoto is the only book you'll need during your visit. One of the few dedicated city guides for Kyoto, this is a useful, intelligent book for visitors in every budget range. Author Mason Florence has lived in Japan for several years and has an excellent grip on what makes Kyoto tick. The guide features a thorough history of the old Imperial City, providing excellent insight into the surroundings. Included are 32 pages of color maps to help visitors navigate the maze of Zen gardens and shrines that make up this fascinating city. There is also plenty of information on excursions in the neighboring countryside. Some of the maps can be a bit misleading, but then getting lost is half the fun.
