Braveheart

"Braveheart," a Scottish epic set in the 13th century won the Oscar for best picture. The film also won four other Oscars in including a Best Director award for Mel Gibson who starred as the legendary Sir William Wallace.

Sense and Sensibility

In a year of all things Austen, the 18th and 19th century writer's story of two sisters in search of love and security made it to the big screen. Emma Thompson, who stars as the practical-minded Elinor Dashwood, also wrote the screenplay. Ang Lee directed the film.
