Sharon looks to unite Israel
Ariel Sharon won the office of prime minister February 6, 2001, with the largest vote margin ever in Israeli politics. The Likud Party leader immediately began working to try to unite his country by attracting members of the defeated Labor Party to his administration. Sharon was sworn in March 7, following the parliament's approval of his coalition. The unity government that Sharon formed is the largest in Israel's history and is split into a broad spectrum of left, right, center and religious parties.
