SkyDome and Le Stade Olympique
Domes-to-go
Retractable domes are a wave of the future for baseball parks. Seattle, Milwaukee and Minnesota plan to open such stadiums in the next few years, but the unique facilities were pioneered in Canada.
Toronto's Blue Jays and Montreal's Expos -- who share their home fields with Canadian Football League teams -- play ball rain or shine on Astroturf.
The $500-million SkyDome in Toronto, opened in 1989, could hold a 31-story building inside with the roof closed, and features a haven for travelers -- a 348-room hotel at center field, with field views from 70 of the rooms.
The dome at Montreal's 1976 Olympic Stadium has been a bit ... problematic.
Weighing 50 tons, it's not as easy to open and close as those at newer stadiums, and has been closed permanently for several seasons. But a 556-foot leaning tower -- used to retract the roof -- offers spectacular views of the city from its observation deck.
