WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Senate Whitewater Committee Chairman Alfonse D'Amato said Friday that Hillary Rodham Clinton's statement last year that she was not regularly involved her law firm's work with her Whitewater partner's S&L was "clearly misleading."

Mrs. Clinton was the billing partner for the Rose Law Firm. She said at a press conference last year that an associate specializing in securities law did nearly all of the work involving Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan.

Webster Hubbell

However, her name appears on the firm's bill to Madison Guaranty for thousands of dollars of work involving a stock offering and other securities-related matters.

Webster Hubbell, a former associate attorney general and colleague of Mrs. Clinton's at the Rose firm, told the committee that the work billed by Mrs. Clinton could easily have been performed by someone else.

Sen. Robert Bennett, R-Utah, rejected Hubbell's explanation, saying that the bill made it appear that Mrs. Clinton "was heavily involved" in day-to-day matters of the firm's work with Madison. (149K AIFF sound or 149K WAV sound)

"She was the billing partner," Hubbell said. "The breakdown is over a securities matter. We don't know what the other work was. " During a recess, D'Amato told reporters he, too, was unconvinced by Hubbell's explanation.

When asked if he planned to add to written questions the panel has already submitted to the first lady, D'Amato said that they would first attempt to get Robert Massey, the associate who she said did most of the securities work for Madison, to the witness table.

D'Amato said he is convinced the Rose Law Firm and Mrs. Clinton knew they were helping Madison Guaranty acquire a parcel of land called Castle Grande through illegal means. "For a reputable firm to allow itself to be aiding and abetting illegal activity is incredible," D'Amato said.
