Roofs collapse because of snow, ice

(CNN) -- While inclement weather continued throughout the Northeast Friday, even homes and businesses were not safe havens.

"The water freezes overnight," said roofing specialist Bob Woolridge. "The water thaws during the day ... and we have an ice trap at the very eve (of the roof)."

One of the largest shopping malls in the East was closed Saturday after security guards noticed its roof sagging from the weight of snow above the main entrance and food court at the Potomac Mills outlet mall in Woodbridge, Virginia.

The roof collapsed on about four dozen shoppers at Waldbaum's supermarket on Long Island, New York, Friday evening, injuring at least 11 people. None of the injuries were life threatening, officials said.

No one was hurt when the roof of Harlem's oldest African-American church collapsed, destroying much of its sanctuary Friday afternoon. St. Philips Episcopal Church was built in 1911.

One person was hurt when a printing plant's roof collapsed in Voorhees, New Jersey, Friday night. Nine others escaped unhurt, according to The Associated Press.

Heavy snow was believed to have caused a barn roof to collapse in Darlington, Pennsylvania, killing a 46-year-old woman who was feeding her horses Friday, according to the AP.

A shed roof fell on 52 head of cattle on a farm in Keedysville, Maryland, killing one cow, the AP reported.
