More snow blankets parts of eastern U.S.

Parts of the Eastern United States got another coating of snow Friday as a storm front moved north from South Carolina. Snow fell as far south as northern Alabama Friday morning, and was expected to stretch into Northeastern cities later in the day. The snow was accompanied by some very cold temperatures dipping well into the South.

The weather service issued a winter storm warning for the Washington, D.C. area, with snow expected to be heavy Friday afternoon. Snowfall accumulations of 4 inches were reported in Virginia.

Philadelphians were on alert for heavy snow, and New Yorkers were told 3 to 6 inches could blanket the area by evening, with more to fall overnight.

While the snow was predicted to be heavy at times across much of the affected area, the storm system itself was considerably weaker than the systems that pushed blizzards across the area earlier this year.

Police in Huntsville, Alabama said that road conditions there were worse than they had been two weeks ago, when an ice storm covered the state.

"Last time, we had a foundation of crunchy ice with snow on top, so there was a little traction on the roads," said Sgt. Jerry Wheeler. "This time ... it immediately glazed over."

Snowy and icy conditions were also reported in parts of eastern and middle Tennessee and western North Carolina, as well as Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Kentucky.

The mid-Appalachian region expected 4 to 6 inches in some areas.
